Describe your business

Colin’s Hope is a Texas based water safety and drowning prevention organization. Colin’s Hope was formed in August, 2008 after 4-year-old, Colin Holst fatally drowned in a public lifeguarded pool in South Austin. Upon learning that drowning is the NUMBER 1 cause of accidental death for children under 5 and a leading cause for ages 1-14, yet drowning is preventable – Colin’s parents, Jeff and Jana Holst founded the organization.

Now 10 years old, Colin’s Hope has quickly become the trusted water safety resource in Texas, a leader in drowning prevention across the nation and is recognized as a global partner in drowning prevention. Colin’s Hope a partner in the U.S. CPSC Pool Safety campaign and serves in leadership roles with: The Texas Drowning Prevention Alliance, The National Drowning Prevention Alliance, the Central Texas Water Safety Coalition, Safe Kids Austin and are founding members of the Families United to Prevent Drowning Collective. What are your greatest challenges?

Many people do not know that drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children under 5 and a leading cause for ages 1-14. They believe that drowning happens to other peoples' families and will not impact them. However, drowning has no boundaries. Drowning can happen to anyone regardless of age, race, socioeconomic status or even swimming ability. Sadly, Texas has already lost 20 children this year to fatal drownings, while many more have survived a non-fatal drowning incident. We want people to know that Drowning is fast, silent and PREVENTABLE.

How can we, as a community, engage with Colin's Hope & get involved?

Our website www.colinshope.org gives comprehensive water safety and drowning prevention information for parents and caregivers.Colin’s Hope challenges our neighbors to take the Colin’s Hope online water safety quiz at www.colinshope.org/watersafetymonth/ to see how much they know about water safety. We also rely on the support of our 3000+ volunteers, donors and community partners to help us with our mission of raising awareness to prevent children from drowning. We love working with individuals, families, school groups, faith based groups and corporate teams to achieve the vision of a world where children do not drown.

What is the one thing that sets Colin's Hope apart from other groups like yours?

We are local to the Lake Travis area and have a BOLD goal to end drowning in Central Texas so that no other family has to lose a child to something that is preventable. Have the BEST DAY EVER.
